The 2005 ASN
Canada FIA Canadian AutoSlalom Championship on August 20 – 21 was a
great success. The Championship alternates between Eastern and Western
Canada, and this year returned to Westerner Park Fairgrounds in Red Deer
Alberta. 125 drivers from five provinces and three states competed over
two days to determine the 2005 Overall Canadian Champion AutoSlalom
Driver as well as the champions for each of 23 classes.
The host clubs for
the event, the Calgary Sports Car Club and the VCMC Motorsports Club of
Vancouver, were very pleased with the turnout and the participation of
competitors from Ontario to B.C.
The competition
consisted of eight runs over two days, with the best time from each day
combined to determine the total time. The Overall Winner was determined
using a handicap system to equalize the times between all of the classes
to see who was the best driver.
The 2005 ASN Canada FIA
Canadian AutoSlalom Championship winner is Shane Jensen, from Kelowna
B.C. in his Honda Civic, with an indexed time of 74.362 seconds, beating
his nearest competitor by two tenths of a second over the two days of
competition. In second place was Nuno Ferreira, from Calgary Alberta in
his Mini Cooper, and in third place was Kevin Deitz, from Seattle
Washington, in a borrowed Mazda Miata.
First place
trophies were also awarded to the winners of the 23 class competitions
with Pat Smith from Edmonton in his Volkswagen Jetta winning his D Super
Stock Class by only 1/1000 of a second over two days. Almost all
of the classes were decided by fractions of a second, which made for
some close and exciting competition among the drivers on Sunday.
AutoSlalom is a
driving skill contest where drivers negotiate a set course of traffic
pylons in a parking lot. Emphasis is on driving skill not speed, and the
sport is accessible to anyone with a street worthy vehicle. The sport
provides an outlet for everyday drivers to have fun competing with their
vehicle in a safe and controlled environment.
AutoSlalom is the
entry level of motorsport from which drivers can progress on to higher
levels of competition.
The Canadian
AutoSlalom Championships were first held in 1972 and 2005 marks the 33rd
year for AutoSlalom in Canada. The 2005 Championship was sponsored by
ASN Canada FIA, Mobil 1 Oils, and the five Motorsport Regions across
Canada: CACC, WCMA, CASC-OR, FAQ, and ARMS.
