The 2006 ASN Canada FIA Canadian AutoSlalom Championship on August 4-6 was held at the Toronto Congress Centre. George Dixon of Scarsdale, New York was the decisive overall winner in his SuperSport classed Corvette. George had the fastest time of day on both days of the national competition and won the overall Canadian AutoSlalom Champion title by almost seven tenths of a second over Carl Wener of Montreal, Quebec who was competing in an Acura Integra Type R in D Stock. Finishing in third place was JT Letkeman from Steinbach, Manitoba in his D Stock Audi TT.
The annual event, which alternates between eastern and western Canada was organized by Subaru Performance Drivers Association and the Mazda Sportscar Owners Club under the direction of Joe Trinidad. Ninety-seven participants from Ontario, Quebec, Manitoba, New Brunswick and five states took part with many regional and Sports Car Club of America national and divisional winners amongst the field. The competition itself took place over two days with each driver counting his best of five runs of each day to give a combined time which determined the final standings in each of the 23 classes contested. The overall standings to determine the Canadian AutoSlalom Champion were calculated by multiplying each drivers combined time by the pre-set performance adjustment factors which are designed to allow for comparison of the performances in the different classes. While competition was very close (the top ten overall were separated by less than 1.5 seconds), several of the classes were separated by much less. Rhys Hayes in his Subaru WRX edged Doug Phillips in his Chevrolet Camaro Z28 in E Super Stock by 0.062 seconds and Kyle Lynch edged Tony Kloosterman (in B Street Prepared Subaru WRX STis) by 0.25 seconds. One feature of the event was a test and tune event on the Friday where two short 30 second courses allowed participants an unlimited number of runs to sort out their vehicles in regard to the course conditions they would see during the competition. The organizers invited local police forces involved with Ontario's initiative to eliminate racing activities on streets everywhere (ERASE) to participate in the test and tune in several loaner cars. Several different police agencies were represented and officials from the Ontario Ministry of Transport were also present. The Canadian AutoSlalom Championships were first held in 1972. 2006 marks the 34th year of the championships. The 2006 Championship was sponsored by ASN Canada FIA, Mobil 1 Oils, TRAC, Kodak, Japanese Auto, and the five Motorsport Regions across Canada: CACC, WCMA, CASC-OR, FSAQ and ARMS. |
