The 2006 ASN Canada FIA Canadian SoloSprint Championship, September 2-4, was held at the Autodrome Ste-Eustache in Ste Eustache, Qubec and Chris Paczynski of Ontario was crowned the ASN Canada FIA Canadian SoloSprint Champion. Chris drove his Grand Touring 4 class Honda CRX DX to a GT4 class win on both days of the national competition and his score of 198.506 points gave him the title over Hanif Premji of Ontario who was competing in a Grand Touring 2 class Honda Civic VX who scored 197.456 points. Finishing in third place was Avi Koifman also from Ontario in his Super Grand Touring 3 class Subaru Impreza WRX STi who scored 195.694 points. The second annual Canadian SoloSprint Championship event, held last year in Ontario, was organized by Club Autosport des Laurentides (CADL) and Trac Lapping Club (TLC) under the direction of Frederic Pruneau. Fifty-seven participants from Ontario, Quebec and New Brunswick took part in an event that held many challenges in terms of weather and resultant track conditions. While the test and tune lapping sessions on Saturday were carried out in pleasant, warm weather, Sunday dawned wet, windy and considerably cooler. The winds would prove helpful in drying out the track when the rain stopped, but the first run session was very wet as the rain that had started during the previous night, continued. This left the competitors with decisions to make about tires and strategy. During the break between the first and second run session, the rain stopped and the track started to dry out and, by the third run session, times for most competitors improved dramatically as the track was completely dry. Day two followed a similar pattern as day one although there was not as much standing water for the first run session. After each session, the run order was adjusted to reflect the best lap time being obtained by each competitor and as the track conditions constantly changed over the two days, so did the results and run order. Competitors counted their best lap time from three runs of three laps on each day to give a combined time which determined the final standings in each of the 11 classes that were contested While competition was very close in most classes, some classes were determined by fractions of a second. In the heavily entered GT2 class (11 entrants); Hanif Premji in his Acura Integra Type R beat Carl Wener of Montreal, Quebec by 0.118 seconds on day one and by 0.061 seconds on day two. In Super Grand Touring 2, three competitors were separated by less than two tenths of a second on day one. Christian Sorensen of Markham, Ontario in his BMW 328is came from third on day one to take the class by less than two tenths of a second. The 2006 Championship was sponsored by ASN Canada FIA, Mobil 1 Oils, TRAC Racing Depot and the five Motorsport Regions across Canada: CACC, WCMA, CASC-OR, FSAQ and ARMS.
(The top five, won their class on both days and scored 200 points, final placings were determined by their points based on their back-up times from each day.) |
