The
2008 ASN Canada FIA Canadian AutoSlalom Championship, August
2-3, was held in Slemon Park in Prince Edward Island.
The facility, a former air base, allowed
a challenging 5800 foot course for the drivers.
Carl Wener (centre) of Montreal, Quebec was the decisive overall
winner in his D Stock classed Acura Integra Type R.
Wener had the fastest time of day in D Stock on both
days of the national competition and won the overall Canadian AutoSlalom
Champion title by almost 2.7 seconds over Bruno
Lajoie (left) of Laprairie, Quebec who was competing as the second
driver in the same car
that Wener
drove.
Finishing in third place
was Paul Vanderlaan
(right) from Hanwell,
New Brunswick in his H Stock Honda Civic SI.
The annual event,
alternating between eastern and western Canada, was organized by Moncton Motor
Sport Club
under the direction of
Ray Bastille,
the event organizer, and
Ming-Duc Wong,
the events liaison.
Ninety-five participants
from seven provinces and several north-eastern states took part with many former
and current Canadian national and regional champions as well as several Sports
Car Club of America national and divisional winners amongst the field.
The competition itself
took place over two days with each driver counting his best run of each day to
give a combined time which determined the final standings in each of the 22
classes contested.
The overall standings to
determine the Canadian AutoSlalom Champion were calculated by multiplying each
drivers combined time by the pre-set performance adjustment factors (PAX) which
are designed to allow for comparison of the performances in the different
classes.
Weners
188.893 total time, when PAX adjusted gave him a winning time of 153.381.
There were 8 different classes represented in the top 10 overall
finishing drivers.
While competition was very
close (the top ten overall were separated by 8.4 seconds), five of the classes,
beyond Wener and
Lajoies D Stock, were separated
by much less.
Joel Nelson in his Honda Civic, by 0.241 seconds, edged
out Tim Gallant and his Volkswagen
Golf in the five entry F Street Prepared;
Wes Tanney in his Honda Civic SI won G Stock (6 entries)
over Alan Pozner in his Honda
Civic SI by 0.39 seconds;
Chris Uhlman in his Mazda Miata edged out
Paul Kreutzwisers Mazda Miata by
just 0.691 seconds in C Street Prepared in a seven vehicle field;
Mark Obermaier in his BMW 323i triumphed over
Trung Do in his Nissan 240sx by
0.969 seconds in D Street Prepared with nine entries;
Robert Lang in his Triumph TR6 was 1.214 seconds faster
than Alain Hamel in his Subaru
Impreza in D Modified which had 12 entries;.
The Canadian AutoSlalom Championships were first held in 1972 and 2008 marks the 36th year for the championships.
