SUPPORT RACE
Drivers to chase over $20,000 in prize money
May 26, 2003 (Montreal) - Canadas best Formula Ford racers will once
again appear at the Air Canada Grand Prix, June 13-15, 2003, as the Canadian
Formula Ford Championship presented by Deringer returns to Le Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve
in support of the Formula 1 Grand Prix.
The F1600 race is always a great show and an important part of our Formula 1
event, said Normand Legault, President of Grand Prix F1 du Canada, Inc. Our
fans have long enjoyed the excitement this race has provided. Its a great
opportunity to see our next generation of racing stars show off their skills in
this close and competitive Canadian series.
We are very pleased to be back at the Air Canada Grand Prix, said Eric Berman
of Berman Motorsport Group, Inc., series organizers. Canadian teams and
drivers have much to be grateful for. The generous support of Grand Prix F1 du
Canada, Inc. helps ensure the continued development of so many young and
talented drivers in this country. Mr. Legaults personal efforts have been a
major factor in sustaining a strong Canadian racing program.
Grand Prix officials announced that the prize fund for the Formula Ford race is
expected to reach over $20,000. Chris Guerrieri of Pickering, ON, will return to
defend his title as winner of the crown jewel of the Formula Ford calendar. It
was the sole race won by Guerrieri in a season dominated by eventual champion
Louis-Philippe Dumoulin, who captured six wins in eight races in 2002.
Guerrieri went on to win the 2002 Ford Rookie of the Year title and has already
won one race of two so far this season.
The Formula Ford race is tentatively scheduled for Saturday afternoon.
Past graduates of the Canadian Formula Ford series who have moved up this racing
ladder include CART drivers Alexandre Tagliani and Paul Tracy. Other notable
Canadian graduates include Jonathan Macri, Marc-Antoine Camirand and Billy Asaro.
