Team Ultra 94 |
Matt Champagne, Aaron de Heus and Jordy Vorrath capture five of six wins in season opener
MOSPORT, ONTARIO The three Sunoco Team Ultra 94 members had a solid showing in the season opening 2003 Bridgestone/FormulaCar Magazine F2000 Racing Series at Mosport on June 20-22. Twenty-four drivers are taking part in the series, including the three Sunoco Team Ultra 94 drivers, Fonthill, Ontarios Matt Champagne, Vancouvers Jordy Vorrath and Uxbridge, Ontarios Aaron de Heus.
The 24 drivers are split up into two randomly picked groups for each race that consists of 12 of the 24 drivers. Its neat the way they do it, de Heus said. Sometimes I will be the only Team Ultra 94 driver in a race, and sometimes all three of us could be in the same race.
During the course of the weekend, all three drivers ran three races, and as a team, one of the Sunoco Team Ultra 94 drivers stood on the top step an amazing five out of six times. Champagne managed to capture two poles, on his way to winning all three of his weekend races.
It was great to get this first weekend behind us, Champagne said. I think we were all a little nervous going in, but now we know what to expect from the series, it is just a case of settling in and getting the job done.
Vorrath had a perfect weekend going until his third race. He had been on the pole and won his two previous races, but a difficult gearbox in qualifying for his third race saw him have to settle for fifth on the grid. Vorrath moved up to third in his final race.
I have to say this was a great weekend for all of us, Vorrath said. We worked well as a team, helping each other out where we could, and I cant wait for the next round.
De Heus meantime was having a solid weekend. He qualified fourth in his first race and finished third. He qualified fifth in his second race and moved up to third and in his final race he qualified fifth but was a victim of another drivers incident which gave him a dnf (did not finish) in his final race of the weekend. This was a tough break for the Uxbridge driver as he had set the fastest race lap before having to retire. A tough way to end the weekend, de Heus said. But now we have the first weekend behind us, we know we are all threats to win this for Sunoco and Ron Fellows. It is great being part of this team, I cant wait for the next race weekend.
Once the racing at Mosport was over, all the team members headed to Barrie, where rounds 5 and 6 of the Sunoco Ron Fellows Karting Championship presented by Toronto Star Wheels was in progress. The team members made it in time to catch several of the races and were on hand to help hand out the trophies to the class winners at Barrie.
